Oncology Massage Summit is coming

healthy cell box 2 So, I am zooming off to Minnesota. There are over 300 massage therapists registered for the Northwestern Health Science Oncology Massage Healing Summit. This event happens every three years and it is an opportunity for massage therapists to gather and learn from some of the most experienced in the oncology massage field. The speakers are  Frank Ostaseski , Megan Cole, Gayle McDonald, Tracy Walton, Isabel Adkins and more. Some of the topics include end of life care, Lymphedema, Bowen, eastern bodywork modalities and more.

I am happy to have signed up for the Clinical Applications of Essential Oils for Cancer Patients  Clients. I know how effective and useful aromatherapy is for calming the motions and nourishing the body- I can hardly wait for this useful information. It is so satisfying to pamper my oncology clients! I only wish I could figure out a way to attend all of the workshops…hmmm cloning Calvin and Hobbes style?

I will have more to share next week, until then Enhance your health; it’s a precious gift and thanks for checking in.

Are you a coconut or a mango?

Don’t worry, we can figure this out easily.  And if you are a coconut, you will soon be a mango.  If you are a mango already-good for you!

Whecoconut mango 005n was the last time you thought about your scalp muscles?  A good scalp massage makes the whole head feel better.  It releases tension, increases circulation and stimulates the hair follicles. Our scalp tissue is rather thin and it is very easy to access the muscles.  One of the chewing muscles- temporalis- is located just above your ears.  Let’s take a few minutes and place your fingertips around your ears and press into the scalp.

Become aware of your scalp.  Maybe do little finger circles on temporalis, first in one direction, then reverse…move your fingers a little higher and gently press. You may want to do circles here.  Now, follow your hairline all the way around your head.  If you find a tight spot, press on it gently and move it a bit…side to side or circles.  Check your scalp just above the neck in back; these muscles can get tight, too.  Allow yourself to spend about 3-5 minutes relaxing all of your scalp muscles.

Now it’s time to answer the question: are you a coconut or a mango?  If you started off as a coconut, I hope you are a mango now.  And if you are still a coconut, spend a few more minutes on your scalp muscles.  My clients are always pleasantly surprised how good it feels to spend a little time on their scalp muscles.  Go mango!

Debunking the pain myth: emotional pain

Big Sur view from the sidecarHave you ever heard “no pain, no gain”?  It may be time to reconsider that concept.  Pain is the body’s natural defense that something is very wrong and please stop it right now!  Pain actually serves us by bringing to our awareness that we are hurting.   There are people who are born with Congenital Insensitivity to Pain & Anhidrosis and they have no pain receptors; they break bones or burn themselves and they don’t even know it because they can’t feel it.

No experts anywhere agree on exactly what pain is, and no one (so far) has been able to quantify pain levels.  There are brain scans which can show areas of the brain tissue that lights up when stimulus is applied, but it does not measure the degree of pain that each person feels.  There are many people in chronic pain that have gone through extensive testing and have not been given a clear diagnosis for the source of their pain.

Sometimes, we may feel the need to have our pain validated by another and it doubly hurts when we are not believed.  Some of my clients say that they have been told that their pain is only emotional, not physical.  In many ancient healing systems, emotional pain is acknowledged to be the forbearer of disease in the physical body.  The fact that many ancient healing systems combine the emotional and body wisdom validates this point of view to me.  I am only a lay person, but intuitively, I knew that emotional pain is just as real (and often times even more difficult to overcome) as physical pain and I also learned about this because I felt it in my own body after an automobile collisionAnd was completely discounted…

Thank goodness for challenges!  I’ve had a chance to learn new possibilities about body work and healing and found them to be very uplifting and life altering.  Traditional Chinese Medicine shows a correlation between the meridians and emotions in the body.  For some interesting reading on the meridians with a western spin, look up Candice Pert or John Diamond.  Ancient Ayurvedic Medicine focuses on the chakra system and there is a link between each energy center, the physical body, mind, and spirit; thus showing an individual as a whole, and not only that- each of us are part of the whole.

In the book “The Body has a Mind of It’s Own”, brain research has shown the an area of the brain called the insula lights up from emotional trauma such as shunning or name calling exactly as though the body has felt a blunt force trauma.  Western research is beginning to find the hard core link they need to validate emotional pain is real pain…finally.

I truly enjoy the moment when my clients feel whole again- mind/body/spirit connection through gentle loving touch.

Now, what we can for ourselves to enhance healthy change no matter where we are in life?  We can begin by practicing loving kindness towards ourselves and others.  We can be compassionate about other peoples’ pain.  And we can nourish our mind, body and spirit with healthy healing touch! You may choose to call today to set up your wellness appointment: bodywork or hypnotherapy-which is right for you?

Healthy touch, Kricket style

Kricket's massage

Kricket’s massage

Did you know that animals benefit from massage, too?  When I began my massage career way back in 2003, I had an adorable 11 year old black lab. He was very stiff and moving slow- arthritic hips are quite the norm for his breed and age. It was so hard to see him struggle, no longer running after tennis balls or apples (he was a bit odd that way).

One day while we were snuggling on the floor, I wondered if he might like some massage?

It was as if he could read my mind- his body trembled beneath my hands. I started on his hind legs; gentle circles, effleurage, a bit of kneading. I followed his spine, repeating the sequence…then massaged his front legs and ended on his head and neck. He stood up, shook a few times and walked away after about 30 minutes.

Well, I wanted to see what would happen the next day. I set my intention to give him a massage- this time he didn’t move a muscle. It was almost like he was holding his breath. I repeated the massage sequence I did the day before. After about a half an hour, he got up, shook all over and walked away.

The third day, things got interesting. My old puppy dog came over, stood on my foot and leaned into me with his body weight. I knew immediately he was saying “it’s time for my massage, let’s go”. So we did.

The positive changes that happened with my pup made my husband a believer in massage therapy. Our dog regained his mobility and loved to receive healthy touch through massage. He could chase apples again, walk on the beach and go up the stairs. And massage continued to help him right up till the day he collapsed in my arms before he died. I was grateful to be there with him and hold him at the end. I will readily admit that I cried my eyes out for more than a week.

Over the years, I have been honored to provide massage to many canine and feline friends: Bogie, Sammy, Neuman, Bo, Rosie, Bailey, Marley and more. Working with an animal is amazing, they are so open to receiving loving touch…and when they have had enough- they get up and walk away. Some of my animal massage has been for injury and trauma, some as been comfort touch for old age and dying. And some animal massage has been just for fun and because they love how it feels.

A picture says a thousand words; you can tell by looking at Kricket that she really enjoys massage. She is on my massage table faster than a blink; and as you can see, she really knows how to relax!

Ps. I love massaging human beings, too.

Thoughts on Oncology Massage & GMO’s

I was having dinner and conservation with two dear friends the other evening.  We talked about all kinds of stuff…then one asked “What’s the big deal with GMO’s? And even if they eventually passed labeling laws, what good will it do?”

Many things went through my mind. I asked what either of them knew about GMO’s and they really didn’t know much. Genetically Modified Organisms are introduced into various crop seed (such as corn, soy and so on) for some of the following reasons:

Some GMO’s are bred to be resistant to herbicides (such as Monsanto’s Round Up). Monsanto spent quite a bit of money to produce this technology.  Are you with me so far? Seed crops that are resistant to Round Up are doused with said herbicide to keep the field weeds down. As GMO crops grow, they may be treated with  Round Up several times before they are harvested. When these crops are processed, you are ingesting that residual poison that was sprayed on the plants. Pesticides may also end up in the water supply, but that’s another topic. And as far as I know, there is no research that has shown it is safe for people to eat GMO’s,  let alone all of the extra pesticides.

In the 1950’s, Rachel Carson wrote a book called “Silent Spring”. She noticed that the local birds had all but disappeared; it was found that they were poisoned by pesticides.

There has been strong research since the 1960/70’s that proves people who are exposed to herbicides develop disease related illnesses. In the USA today, you have a 1 in 6 chance of receiving a cancer diagnosis. In my private practice, I have met 35 clients with a cancer diagnosis in the last 6 years…It is a bit ironic that we already know that pesticides= increase cancer risks, yet our food supply has more chemicals sprayed on it than ever.  I wonder why the FDA allows it? Heck, I wonder why WE allow it?

Other types of GMO’s have bacteria called Bt (Bacillus Thuringiensis introduced into the DNA of the seed.  What does Bt do? It kills caterpillars.  Why is it in the seed? So that as the plant grows, any caterpillar that comes along and eats it is going to croak. After these crops are harvested and processed, humans are then exposed to Bt in their food.  What effect does eating Bt have on humans? Who knows???! There have been no studies done on the effect of Bt GMO’s and the human diet. The FDA has allowed these products to be introduced into our food chain with no research about side effects.

Also, I kind of miss the moths and butterflies…Bt is an indiscriminate killer- it doesn’t tell the pests from the beneficial.  And yes, there are beneficial moths and butterflies.

One last thing I will mention about the GMO’s is that many of these crops are wind pollinated.  Anytime the pollen is ripe and the wind is blowing- that pollen is flying around everywhere trying to land in the spot where they can get lucky. Why is that a big deal? Because there are farmers (believe it or not!) who prefer to grow plants the old fashioned way: without GMO’s.  When the wind blows, if a neighboring farmer is using GMO’s, the pollen from those crops may contaminate one who isn’t.

Now for another little kicker- Monsanto has a marker that they insert into their wind pollinated seed and are suing when their marker shows up in a field where a farmer didn’t purchase Monsanto seed. I sort of think it should be the other way around: the farmers who don’t want the stuff oughta be able to protect their crops and Monsanto should contain their GMO’s.

Onward and thanks for sticking with me so far. Now I am going to tell you just a bit about the term “resistance”. Some insects under good weather conditions can reproduce entire generations in 5-10 days. Many plants can reproduce seed once a year and some mutate very easily.  Remember, human reproduction takes decades. When pesticides are sprayed repeatedly, most of the pests are killed. However, those few that were unaffected are able to reproduce, and as the susceptible population dies, the resistant ones take over.  This applies to insects, fungus, bacteria…Just like the killer staph infections that resist antibiotics and you probably have already heard about that. So “new & improved” toxic sprays are needed and the cycle repeats.  And I mentioned the human reproduction cycle takes much longer, so we do not adapt as fast. In fact, it may take a generation or two before we even see how serious the damage is.

Right now, there are no labeling laws. We are eating GMO’s with no guarantee of safety; no studies have been done on how they affect human health. Sugar beets, potatoes, tomatoes, soybeans, cottonseed oil and every corn product and (including high fructose corn syrup) that you eat or drink, you are also ingesting GMO’s. And believe me, the few products that are not GMO are very happy to tell you so. I just saw the GMO’s are also in our pet foods!

For me, I would like to know so that I could fully support farmers who do not use GMO seed. Show me the label and let me vote with my dollars. The farmers who want to continue funding a company like Mosanto are free to do so, and I want to be free to NOT!
